Markus Jans

How did our ancestors in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries acquire their competence as musicians (singers, instrumentalists and composers)? What process did they go through to become professionals? Various sources offer a new perspective on of the historic teaching and learning procedures. The insights may ultimately change our ways of teaching and learning counterpoint.

Markus Jans, (*1946), professor emeritus of  the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (University of Early Music, Basel, Switzerland).  He co-developed and taught ‘Historische Satzlehre’ (1972-2009) as well as ‘History of Music Theory’ (1979-2010). He was active as choral conductor (1970-2010). His publications relate to techniques and aesthetics of composition in the context of the historic approach to music theory.
