Bachelor Programme in Pop Music

Instrument, Creativity, Education, and Organization
The four-year bachelor's degree in Pop Music is an excellent preparation for all aspects of professional practice within the national and international music industry. The balanced curriculum has four pillars - Instrument, Creativity, Education, and Organization - which give ample scope to the development of each individual student's specific talents. Future pop artists trained at the pop department of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam will be creative, independent, enterprising artists who are ready for the future.

Structure of the Curriculum

The programme focuses on creating and producing original music and playing in bands and acts. The first and second years of the programme include developing instrumental skills, songwriting, production, theoretical subjects, and cultivating each student's creativity. In the third and fourth years, students further develop these ingredients and are given more space for their bands, projects, and further specialization. An extensive range of electives allows students to specialize in a particular direction. In ‘Advanced Style Labs’, which combine style, analysis, and the creation of original music and productions, students can explore styles of their choice in greater depth.

Students conclude the  bachelor's programme in Pop Music with a performance at the MayDays final exam festival, which is held at various renowned pop venues in Amsterdam. Here, final exam candidates showcase the results of four years of hard work: a wide range of new music created according to their own formula. Students organize the festival entirely on their own. Together, they take care of the production, promotion, line-up, and finances. Each evening features a complete music programme consisting exclusively of the student's own work. All students present an EP with at least five original tracks and artwork.

Assessment

Assessment is based on performances, exams, and project assignments. Students are assessed according to the AMACK system, whereby they receive constructive feedback and feedforward in five areas: attitude, motor skills, auditory skills, creativity, and knowledge. Together, these components form a 360-degree assessment aimed at optimizing the growth potential of each student. More information about this educational system can be obtained at the Open Day.

Preparation for Professional Practice

The programme has a broad network within the music industry, which enables students to establish essential contacts. A special course, Industry & Entrepreneurship, prepares students for the business aspects of the music industry. Courses such as methodology and educational subjects give students insight into setting up their own course programmes for all forms of music education. Some of the classes are taught by guest specialists from the music industry.

Accreditation and Degree

The bachelor's programme in Pop Music is a track within the Bachelor of Music. The quality of this programme has been positively assessed by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme students will receive an accredited bachelor's degree in Music and the title Bachelor of Music. Only accreditated degree programmes are listed in the Dutch central register of higher education programmes (CROHO).
