CvA Symphony Orchestra

Several times a year, students work in the CvA Symphony Orchestra with renowned conductors, on a varied and challenging repertoire. The orchestra performs in major venues such as Het Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht, Het Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. The symphony orchestra also plays a role in exceptional projects, such as the Cellobiënnale and the YPF Pianoconcours.

April 2023 - Mystique and minimal

CvA Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ryan Bancroft
Mystique & minimal: Charles Ives - The Unanswered Question; Mahler - Adagio uit Symfonie no. 10 in Fis; Jasmine Karimova en Bela Braack - Growth, A Symphonic Poem; John Adams - Harmonielehre

What is the meaning of life? That's the question of the solo trumpet in Ives' The Unanswered Question, and a quartet of woodwinds searches for the answer, in vain. We find more mystery in John Adams' Harmonielehre (a nod to Arnold Schönberg's 1911 book of the same name): the legend of King Anfortas and the medieval mystic Meister Eckhart were the sources of inspiration for this work, in which Adams combines late-nineteenth-century chromatic harmonies with the compositional techniques of minimal music. The climax in the second movement echoes the dissonant 'cry' in Mahler's 10th symphony.

Conductor Ryan Bancroft returns home for a while with this concert: he graduated in 2017 from the National Master of Orchestra Conducting, a joint programme of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Royal Conservatoire The Hague. Since then, he has been making a stormy career: he is chief conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and for season 2023-2024 also of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
