Sam Newbould

Sam Newbould (1990) is a saxophonist, composer and bandleader based in Amsterdam. With the aid of a Help Musicians scholarship, Sam moved to the Netherlands to pursue his saxophone studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he graduated from the master degree programme in 2021. Prior to that, he spent a year in Berlin in 2014 studying at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. Outside of music, Sam holds a masters degree in Philosophy from Durham University (UK).

A prolific and multi-award-winning composer, Sam’s compositions are infused with a passion for storytelling and a desire to evoke emotion. With his Sam Newbould Quintet he has released two critically acclaimed albums, Blencathra andBogus Notus. Their third album, Homing, will be released in May 2024.

Besides his own group, Sam is an in-demand sideman with bands including the BvR Flamenco Big Band and the Peter Beets New Jazz Orchestra. He has shared the stage with major international artists including Jasper Blom, Ben van Gelder and Reinier Baas.

Sam teaches at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Conservatory of Maastricht.
