Lucas van Merwijk (1961) has been at the forefront of the European jazz, latin and percussion scene for over 25 years. He studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and took an intensive course in Afro-Cuban drums with Oscarito Valdes in Cuba. He works as a drummer and percussionistwith numerous groups and artists in the Netherlands and Europe. Since 1981, he has been drummer with the famous latin jazz group Nueva Manteca.  Additionally, he leads the internationally renowned Cubop City Big Band, the percussion duo Drumix!, with the African  sabar master drummer Aly N`Diaye Rose, and the world percussion group Drums United.
He teaches at the conservatories of Rotterdam and Amsterdam and gives workshops, masterclasses and lessons thoughout Europe and America.
