AIR - My Music Ability: Inclusive Composing

With Drake Music Scotland | 22-25 November 2023

From 22-25 November 2023, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam hosted the AIR (Artist in Residence) project My Music Ability: Inclusive Composing. It was the third AIR project in the My Music Ability series that focused on inclusive music making and the second to welcome leading organisation Drake Music Scotland as a special guest.

My Music Ability: Inclusive Composing

This third AIR My Music Ability project, Inclusive Composing, was a joint initiative of the Music in Education and Composition Departments and the Arts Education and Music Research Groups. This project focused on composing for and with inclusive ensembles

Pete Sparkes (artistic leader) and Ali Gillies (associate musician) of Drake Music Scotland conducted a four-day workshop programme at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In addition, Drake composer Clare Johnsten provided an online presentation.

Karin van Dijk of Stichting My Breath My Music also conducted a workshop. Additionally, Karin played in the inclusive ensemble, together with fellow musician Dilayla Kars. My Breath My Music has been a regular collaborative partner since the first edition of My Music Ability.

The participants were twelve students (bachelor as well as master from various departments), one teacher and ten guest musicians. Two guest musicians belonged to Stichting My Breath My Music and eight guest musicians to Friends@Work / Muziekschool Noord.

During the four-day workshop programme, students learned about various electronic and adapted instruments and various inclusive composition techniques and participated in an inclusive ensemble. They were introduced to the work of Drake Music Scotland and the My Breath My Music Foundation. Different ideas around "disability" were discussed, such as the "medical and social model of disability," and students were stimulated to think critically about concepts such as equality and equity. They composed a piece of music which was performed in CvA Blue Stage during the Arts Beyond Ableism symposium on 25 November.

Previous projects

The first AIR (Artist in Residence) My Music Ability, in 2018, focused on inclusion in music education through technology. During this AIR with Drake Music (London), the students each designed an inclusive instrument using touch boards and simple electronics. My Music Ability 2, in 2021, welcomed Drake Music Scotland for the first time. This time, the project focused on making music in an inclusive ensemble. Students were introduced to educational strategies that can be used in inclusive ensembles.
