North Carolina bred, Brooklyn based singer/multi-instrumentalist Becca Stevens is a composer and educator. Since making her debut with the 2008 album Tea By Sea, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Becca Stevens has tested the limits of musical identity, mining everything from jazz to Irish folk to indie-rock in her striving for complete and authentic expression.
Boundless in the elements from which she draws her inspiration, Stevens is known for her unique ability to craft exquisite and authentic compositions both for her own band, and for Grammy award winning artists who run the gamut of genre from Jacob Collier, to Michael League (Snarky Puppy), and most notably with folk legend David Crosby and Brad Mehldau, who won the ‘Best Jazz Instrumental Album’ Grammy in 2020.
In her latest musical endeavour ‘WONDERBLOOM’, Becca Stevens again defies all expectation, this time dreaming up a groove-heavy, dance-ready sound infused with elements of pop and funk and R&B. In another major departure, Stevens purposely brought a communal sensibility to the making of WONDERBLOOM—an undertaking that resulted in more than 40 musicians contributing to the album, including Vulfpeck guitarist Cory Wong, long-time collaborator Jacob Collier, and all of her Lighthouse bandmates (keyboardist Michelle Willis, Snarky Puppy bandleader Michael League, and David Crosby himself).
Stevens is a member of Crosby’s Lighthouse Band whose album Here If You Listen (BMG ’18), features the distinct songwriting of its four members—Stevens, Crosby, League, and Michelle Willis. Centred on the captivating vocal presence, Becca’s showcased as a member of David Crosby’s Lighthouse Band, her new album WONDERBLOOM telegraphs an unabashed joy that partly attributes to the project’s production.
Stevens has received copious praise from the likes of The New York Times, The Rolling Stones, was Downbeat Magazine’s 2017 Rising Star Female Vocalist, and was featured on NPR Music’s “Songs We Love” in 2020. She has toured the world performing with her band, and collaborating with peers such as Brad Mehldau, Kneebody, Esperanza Spalding, Billy Childs, Ambrose Akinmusire, Vijay Iyer, Taylor Eigsti, José James, Eric Harland, Gerald Clayton, Travis Sullivan’s Björkestra and many others, and was a featured composer/performer on Snarky Puppy’s Family Dinner, Vol. 2 (GroundUP).
