Makam Research

Makam research has been conducted so far mainly through the angle of two disciplines: ethnomusicology and computational analysis. Although both approaches are useful in reaching certain kinds of conclusions, they often seem to omit important musical elements that are useful for the educational, performative and theoretical aspects of modal music for musicians and music students.
The Makam Research Group, founded by Michalis Cholevas, utilizes active musician-researchers that are focused on the practice of acclaimed masters of the field. They observe, analyse and generalize musical elements that are used to juxtapose the current theoretical schemes and teaching models of Makam music.
