Paul Scheepers studied piano, musicology at Utrecht University and music theory at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. Since 1983 he has taught music theory, both as a principal and as a subsidiary subject, at the conservatories of Amsterdam and The Hague. Additionally he taught at the Musicology Department of Utrecht University for ten years and gives courses in analysis at the Netherlands String Quartet Academy.
Paul Scheepers' main specialism is the analysis technique of Heinrich Schenker and his followers. Furthermore, in his role as a conservatory teacher he is keenly interested in the relationship between analysis and performance practice, ‘Music theory serves the musician,’ being his credo. This has resulted in chamber music projects involving close collaboration between principal subject teachers and theory teachers in coaching ensembles - a promising form of mutual benefit which both teachers and students alike find highly fruitful.
