Marcel Wierckx

Marcel Wierckx obtained his master's degree in Composition, with a focus on interactive electronic music performance, from McGill University in Montreal in 2000. In 2001, Marcel settled in the Netherlands and has since been active as a composer, performer, and creative system designer. He has collaborated with renowned ensembles such as Anouk van Dijk DC, Chunky Move, Dansgroep Amsterdam, and Tin Men and the Telephone. He has performed at many conferences in the Netherlands and abroad, including ISCM, ICMC, and ICLC.

From 2001 to 2021, Marcel was senior lecturer in composition and creative system design at the HKU School of Music and Technology. Since 2011, he has been a core member of the teaching team for the Master's programme in Live Electronics (MLE) and has played an essential role in shaping the curriculum and developing teaching materials. He introduced new topics relevant to MLE, such as audiovisual music, spectral analysis, and machine listening, and taught courses on the history, repertoire, and research methods of electronic music.

Marcel is also conducting research into AI in live performance, funded by both the Music Research Division group at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Stimuleringsfonds. The results have already been incorporated into teaching materials for MLE students and will be published later this year.
