Maikel Claessens

Maikel Claessens (1991) took lessons with Ramon Lormans and Vincent Houdijk in the talent class of Percussion Friends from a young age. In 2016 he obtained his master’s diploma at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

Maikel plays in several ensembles, such as Lunatree and Mallet Collective Amsterdam, with which he recorded a CD with Ivo Janssen of Canto ostinato by Simeon Ten Holt in the Grand Hall of the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam. Together with Ramon Lormans he has formed a marimba duo. Also, he regularly plays with the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble and Philharmonie Zuidnederland. His solo concerts demonstrate his interest in accessible experimental music, mostly in combination with minimal music elements.

Maikel is a teacher of methodology at the Rotterdam Conservatory and a teacher and coordinator of the percussion department of the Sweelinck Academy for young talents at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. As such he is also connected to the Leerorkest, the Music Academy of the International School of Amsterdam and Stichting Percussion Friends, at the latter he is a member of the artistic core team. Finally, Maikel organizes the Percussion Friends Chamber Music Academy with Stichting Percussion Friends at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam on an annual basis.
