Henk Neven

As a Lied and opera singer, baritone Henk Neven appears on major stages around the world. He studied classical voice and opera at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and is a winner of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, the Dutch Music Prize and a participant in the prestigious BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists Scheme.

Henk has performed in, among other venues, the Opéra National de Paris, La Monnaie, Berlin Staatsoper, Komische Oper Berlin, Theater an der Wien, Le Duo de Dijon, Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, L’Opéra National de Montpellier, Grand Théâtre de Tours, Opéra de Rouen, Theatre de Champs-Elysées, Bergen Nasjonale Opera and The Netherlands Opera, in a wide range of roles. He sang, among other roles, Aronte in Armide, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Conte in Le nozze di Figaro, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Phorbas in Oedipe, Mercutio in Roméo et Juliette, Patrocle in Iphiginie en Aulide, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas, Marco in Gianni Schicchi, Schaunard in La bohème, Morales in Carmen, Ben in The Telephone, Mr. Gobineau in The Medium, Mars in Vénus et Adonis; Pollux in Castor et Pollux, and Frère Léon in St. François d’Assise.

Additionally, Henk worked with numerous prominent orchestras, including the Orchestra of the 18th Century, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic, the Netherlandse Bach Society, the Flemish Radio Orchestra, L’Orchestre National de France, Staatskapelle Berlin, Orchestre National de Lyon, Les Concerts Spirituels, Les Talens Lyriques and the Freiburger Barock Orchester. He collaborated with conductors such as Simon Rattle, Edo de Waart, Marin Alsop, Jaap van Zweden, Jan Willem de Vriend, Kenneth Montgomery, Ed Spanjaard, Marc Minkowski, Christophe Rousset, Emmanuel Haïm and Daniel Barenboim.

Henk has appeared at festivals such as the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, the Operadagen Rotterdam, the Cheltenham Festival, Oxford Lieder, Leeds Lieder, the City of London Festival and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. He gave Lied recitals with pianists such as Imogen Cooper, Graham Johnson, Malcolm Martineau, Pauliina Tukiainen Roger Vignoles, Anne le Bozec, Joseph Middleton en Daan Boertien, performing in, among other halls, Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Concertgebouw.

With his duo partner pianist Hans Eijsackers, he has recorded several critically acclaimed albums on the Onyx label. Together with Hans Eijsackers, he is also artistic director of the International Lied Festival Zeist.
