Bobby Mitchell

Bobby Mitchell’s musical interests are embedded in the here and now of music as performance art, as well as the more standard classical repertory of centuries past. A pianist who is not afraid to cross the traditional boundaries of programming and performance practice, he is active as a soloist and collaborative concert pianist on modern and historical instruments and is also reputable as an improviser and composer.

Bobby has performed extensively across Europe, the Americas, Asia, South Africa, and the Middle East. Highlights include concerto performances with Philippe Herreweghe and the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century and countless performances of the piano works of Frederic Rzewski, including Winter Nights, written for him in 2015, as well as the USA première of the Songs of Insurrection

Mitchell records for VDE-GALLO (piano works of Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn), Alpha (Haydn on an original pianoforte), Naxos (late piano works of Frederic Rzewski), New Focus Records (Martin Scherzinger's Piano Etudes), and 7Mountain Records (Two Sonatas – Klaas de Vries and Ludwig van Beethoven – as well as Kraakhelder with violinist Jellantsje de Vries). His YouTube channel has become a frequently visited destination for classical and improvised piano music. Mitchell is artistic director of the piano festival En Blanc et Noir: Festival International de Piano Robert Turnbull in Lagrasse, France, and he teaches Improvisation and Keyboard Musicianship at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
