Catharina Clement
“By creating music, I hope to evoke or convey emotions and touch the listener. My ultimate goal is just that: to make people feel something – even if it is something small. Through music, I attempt to create connections – with myself, with others, and between humans. Perhaps it sounds overly idealistic, but if I somehow manage to make the world just a tiny bit more human through my music, one of my greatest dreams will be achieved.” – Catharina, 12 April 2025.
The Amsterdam-based and originally ‘Zeeuwse’ Catharina Clement (1998) composes, sings, and creates music theatre. She has an affinity with interdisciplinary art forms as well as vocal- and acoustic music. Her music, frequently containing a lyrical, eclectic, and colourful nature, is mostly inspired by personal experiences, psychology, nature, spirituality and fantasy.
Catharina has written for renowned musicians such as the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, HiiiT/Slagwerk Den Haag and Duo Rozemond & Bekkers, and her music has been performed at venues as Wonderfeel, Opera Forward Festival (Nationale Opera & Ballet Amsterdam), Aurora Festival, Dag van de Componist and Oskar Back Prijs. In June 2025, her music will be rehearsed by the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest during a composer’s workshop. Her work will be performed by the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest in October 2025. Currently graduating from her BA in Composition at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Catharina is supervised by Meriç Artaç & Willem Jeths (composition) and Pierre Mak (classical singing). In 2019, she graduated as a musicologist (MA, Universiteit van Amsterdam), focusing on forbidden music during World War II.
About De Hartentuin
De Hartentuin
In mijn hart zit een tuin
Ik geef hem ruimte licht en tijd
Kaal is het nooit
Wanneer een kiem ontspruit, omarm ik hem
als een zon die de dageraad kust.
(poem by Catharina Clement)
De Hartentuin (The Heart Garden) is inspired my own fantasy story, in which two witches obsessively maintain a garden, where trees sprout from which hearts grow. Their obsessiveness results from their conviction, that if the branches from which hearts grow reach high enough, these would touch the sun. If that were to happen, the witches would become immortal. In their longing for immortality, they desperately try to succeed, but they never will.

About Insneeuwing
Dedicated to Miku, Lydia and Pjotr
als sneeuw binnenvalt
is het stil in mij
in wit gelaagd
als trage pijn:

als ik stilte verdraag
draagt zij dan mij?
