1. Harmony in Performance Practice
In this course, which is compulsory for all Early music students, students learn to write thorough-bass realisations of (predominantly unfigured) basses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The student will become acquainted with the progression from modal to tonal harmony and the developments in harmonic language and characteristic national styles. In addition connections will be made between harmony and performance practice i.e., the relationship between harmony and affect, dynamics, accents, articulation and tempo.
