CvA Explore

An introductory programme for secondary education

The Conservatorium van Amsterdam aims to be a place where all musical talent from Amsterdam and the greater Amsterdam area can be trained to become music professionals, regardless of their musical background or origin. This includes young people for whom the step to the conservatoire is not self-evident.

Because these youngsters often do not have a clear picture of what a music education entails and what future prospects it offers, the CvA wants to acquaint them with the institute and the range of courses we offer. We also want to remove the barrier that the theory entrance exam often presents for those who are enthusiastic about studying music. That is why the CvA, in collaboration with a number of secondary schools, is developing a programme that focuses on introducing students to the CvA and providing training in music theory.

The curriculum

Motivated students can sign up for an extra hour of music lessons per week at their own school, taught by their own music teacher. These lessons cover the skills needed for a music study, but for which there is often not enough time in regular lessons, such as ear training, solfège, and music theory. The CvA offers support in constructing these lessons. In principle, these lessons are for students in grade 3 or above (HAVO, VWO), but in consultation with the school, these lessons can also be offered in other grades.
In addition, students visit the conservatoire two to three times on a Saturday. During these visits, students attend a variety of workshops, but they also visit regular classes and ensemble rehearsals. This allows them to get to know all departments of the conservatoire – and each other! – and gives them a broad picture of the range of courses on offer and the career prospects of musicians and music teachers.

'They really enjoyed visiting the conservatoire. Many of them didn’t even know this school existed. They were impressed by the building, and especially by the fact that everyone there - teachers and students alike - was focused on music, just like they were. It really opened up a new world for them.'
Brandon Delagraentiss, teacher at Open Scholengemeenschap Bijlmer
