We are delighted to announce that Shanti Nachtergaele has been appointed as the new principal subject teacher of Violone at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. ‘I was first introduced to early music at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam when I studied here as an exchange student 15 years ago,’ says Shanti. ‘It's very special to be returning now as a teacher!’
About Shanti Nachtergaele
Shanti Nachtergaele is a scholar-performer whose work centers on the interplay between musical practice and research. She has performed with period instrument ensembles across Canada.
As a musicologist, Shanti investigates the history of the double bass and its performers and performance practices. Shanti completed her PhD in musicology at McGill University, where she was awarded a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. She also holds a master’s in music theory and history from Penn State University, a master’s in violone performance from the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag, and a bachelor’s in double bass performance from Shenandoah Conservatory. She studied at the CvA for one semester as an exchange student.
