Orlando Ceder is the brand-new Artist in Residence (AIR) at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (CvA). On May 12, Orlando will be in conversation with the previous AIR, Gillian Moore, to discuss his educational and artistic vision. Everyone is welcome to attend this public interview. As a preview, we asked Orlando three questions.
What can people expect from your Changemakers interview on May 12?
Gillian Moore, the previous AIR, is officially passing the torch to me. In our conversation, I’ll talk about where I plan to focus my energy as the new AIR, and what my main pillars will be.
Can you give us a sneak peek? What do you hope to achieve in your role?
My expertise lies in Afro-Surinamese music. My aim is to bring this musical style to the forefront at the CvA. I also want to connect my own environment, Amsterdam Southeast, and the CvA. This mission actually goes beyond just Amsterdam Southeast—I want to show musicians from different musical backgrounds that pursuing a music education is within their reach. At the same time, it’s important that the CvA adopts an open attitude toward these musicians. So, the core theme of my residency is connection.
Why is it important for people to attend on May 12?
We need to look beyond diversity and focus on creating an inclusive program for everyone—a policy that truly embraces people as they are. It's important that people see that a movement is happening, that change is taking place step by step. Together, we are working towards a better future.
