Keep an Eye The Records: winners 2023

Published on

On Thursday, Jan. 26, the ninth edition of the jazz competition Keep an Eye The Records took place at the BIMHUIS in Amsterdam. During the day, a professional jury chose three lucky bands out of seven finalists: Federico Calcagno Octet, Koen Boeijinga's MOA and Ronny deCarlo. The Conservatorium van Amsterdam was well represented: 2 out of 3 winners were CvA bands, including a CvA alumnus playing for MOA. The three bands received a check worth €10,000 to produce an album, which they will in turn present next year.

The Records 2023 received a record number of 95 applications from eight different conservatories in the Netherlands. After a pre-selection, seven finalists were chosen by a professional jury consisting of Glenn Gaddum, Michael Moore, Suzan Veneman, Mirjam Visser and Brent Oostrum. After ample deliberation the three winners were chosen. Besides the money to make an album, they will receive a coaching program and a series of concerts on Dutch jazz stages. The jury about the participants: 'We enjoyed the beautiful layering of Federico Calcagno Octet. It felt like all the moving parts fit together like pieces of a puzzle and the whole was perfectly balanced.' The octet consists of Federico Calcagno (clarinet, bass clarinet, compositions), José Soares (alto saxophone), Nabou Claerhout (trombone), Adrian Moncada (piano), Aleksander Sever (vibraphone), Pau Sola Masafrets (cello), Pedro Ivo Ferreira (double bass), Nick Thessalonikefs (drums).

The jury was also very enthusiastic about Ronny deCarlo: "This band felt like a real band. The presentation was fantastic and the band sound fresh. We enjoyed the joy of playing that shone off the stage.' Ronny deCarlo consists of Roenik Roa Espinosa (guitar), Micah Graves (keys), Misha Voeykov (bass), and Max Sergeant (drums).
