Johannes Leertouwer to obtain PhD on 12 January

Published on

On 12 January 2023, violinist Johannes Leertouwer, teacher at the CvA, will obtain his PhD at Leiden University. His PhD research focuses on the performance practice of Brahms’ orchestral music in the 19th century, centering on the question how lost elements of 19th-century performance practice can shed new light on the performance of Brahms' music.

The source research was given a practical dimension in the concert hall: during the project period, Johannes performed all of Brahms' symphonies and concertos with an orchestra consisting of CvA students, alumni and teachers. This allowed Leertouwer to test his findings and develop them further. Additionally, Leertouwer places his research in the broader context of historical performance practice in general and what it means for contemporary performance practice and professional music education.
