Ella Zirina has won the sixth edition of the Virtual Jazz Club competition, in the category ‘Under 25’. Virtual jazz Club is a global online competition for young jazz talents. She won with her performance of I Love You Porgy, in which she was joined by David Macchione, double bass, and Elio Pascal Nogue, drums.
A few comments from the judges:
‘Sublime performance of the Gershwin standard. Zirina is a guitar virtuoso with her own style. Her Gibson seems to be an extension of her persona. A lesson in how to develop an improvisation.’ And: ‘[…] all those rich inner voices that Ms. Zirina brings out so beautifully. A full, rich, really centered guitar sound, a very cool Gibson, but most of all a tremendously musical touch and a real sense of connection with the song.’
Ella studies jazz guitar in the first year of the master programme. David Macchione studies double bass in the fourth year of the bachelor programma and Eloi Pascal Nogue is an alumnus from the jazz drums department.
