Jazz students honoured at 44th Downbeat Student Music Awards

Several jazz ensembles and students have won awards at the 44th Downbeat Student Music Awards. The Maripepa Contreras Quintet was awarded ‘Graduate College Outstanding Performance’ in the category ‘Small Jazz Combo’. Oboist Maripepa Contreras, who studies with Jasper Blom, was especially honoured as ‘Outstanding Soloist’.

The Lucas Santana 5tet was awarded ‘Graduate College Co-Winner’ in the category ‘Small Jazz Combo.’ Lucas Figueiredo Santana, who studies with Ben van Gelder, was also honoured as ‘Outstanding Soloist.’

And last but not least vocalist Hila Hutmacher, student with Humphrey Campbell, was awarded ‘Graduate College Co-Winner’ in the category ‘Vocal Jazz Soloist.’

Established in 1976, the DownBeat Student Music Awards are considered the most prestigious awards in jazz education. Awards are given in fifteen categories in five different divisions
