Maarten Mostert awarded royal decoration

During the closing evening of the seventh Cello Biënnale Amsterdam Maarten Mostert was appointed Officer in the Order of Oranje-Nassau. He received the royal decoration in appreciation of his contribution to the education of young cello talents and cultural life in the Netherlands in general.

Maarten Mostert has been a principal subject teacher at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam since 18994, educating countless cellists of the bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes and the Sweelinck Academy, the CvA’s study programme for exceptionally gifted children. Additionally, he is the initiator and artistic director of the Amsterdam Cello Biennale, which started in 2004 and has since developed into a ten-day festival hosting over ninety concerts, performances, masterclasses and workshops by musicians and orchestras from 27 countries, and the National Cello Competition. He also developed the educational programme ‘Hello Cello’, in order to introduce the cello to children and youngsters. Earlier, in 1988, he was the founder of New Sinfonietta Amsterdam, the first professional string orchestra in the Netherlands,  which became one of the leading string orchestras in the world.
