Concert by students of Johan Hofmann and Menno van Delft
Our first student concert of this school year features a special guest. Johan Hofmann will bring his "transposing double" two-manual Ruckers (build by Matthias Griewisch). This type of harpsichord can be considered the most important North-European stringed keyboard instrument of the 17th century. It was the largest model produced by the Ruckers workshops in Antwerp. Its two manuals are a fourth apart. The upper manual has a “normal” pitch while the lower manual, sounding a fourth lower, offers an extraordinary, organ-like gravitas. Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck went to Antwerp to buy one such instrument for the city of Amsterdam. Reincken and Buxtehude had themselves portrayed in front of one.
The students will be playing music by the English virginalists, in addition, there will be Froberger and - of course - Sweelinck!
