The Oxford History of Jazz in Europe is a reception history in five volumes (3000 pages), edited by Walter van de Leur.The chapters are written by some 75 authors from some 25 countries, affiliated with 60 different research institutions in Europe and the U.S. The volumes cover the following time periods:

• Vol. 1. Arrival and early reception, 1910s-1930s
• Vol. 2. The Second World War, 1930s-1940s
• Vol. 3. Conflicting Ideologies and agendas, 1940s-1960s
• Vol. 4. New European idioms, 1960s-1980s
• Vol. 5. Globalization and fusions, 1990s-2010s

Expected publication date for volume 1 is 2022, the remaining volumes will follow in intervals of approximately one year. In addition to the five hardcover volumes, there will also be 10 so-called breakout paperbacks, each covering two European regions: Northern and Eastern Europe, and Southern and Western Europe. The OHJE is rooted in theRhythm-Changes network, and is co-funded byCHIME.
