Vanilla Riot is a contemporary intermedia group of improvisers (Holland, Norway, Slovenia) that have been active in numerous kinds of settings touring though Europe and the U.S.

"Vanilla Riot explodes and implodes, with a baffling new blend of distorted baritone guitar, clarinet, drums and live electronics."

The music moves from particle improv to electronic eruptions, and consist of organized pieces that derive from improvisations.

The trio is inspired by a wide variety of genres, stretching from contemporary music, jazz, electronica, alternative rock and experimental metal. I.e:  John Cage, Meshuggah, Steve Reich, Autechre, Ligeti, Messiaen and Steve Coleman.

When the capabilities of facility/venue allow us, we also use interactive projections of prepared video material on to walls and curtains. Lately we’ve been considering John Cage’s thought: “If there was a message attached to these sounds, we would have used words to express it” and applying it to the visual realm. Improvised sounds of our performance occur simultaneously with an image attached to them, with practically no latency.

Our first album "Stitch" has just been released on the renown Norwegian label AIMSoundCity (www.aimsoundcity.com ).

We received great feedback on our concerts in Norway, during the cd release. A piece from the cd was also broadcasted on national radio.

A review in the Norwegian paper Bergens Tidende:

"...the musicians Bostjan Simon, Stephan Meidell and Onno Govaert show a genuine search for the connection between organic and electronic sound. Known conceptions are thrown overboard, and the sound image is peeled down to a fascinating play with basic elements. I liked the composition "Wirl" the most because it sounds as catchy cross-over music that points across the electronica genre."

Keywords:

Experimental, mixed media, improvised music, live electronics, real time video and sound processing, noise, challenging the screen culture, saturation of sensory input, sound and light pollution. The new and existing material can be heard on our website and our myspace page.

The novelty as of spring 2010 is real time video triggering.
